Dutch trial opens in attempted killing of Iranian activist

Published November 6, 2026

What changed

Five men and one woman went on trial in the Netherlands on November 6 over their alleged roles in the preparation or attempted murder of an Iranian activist and writer in Haarlem in 2024. Dutch prosecutors allege the plot was financially motivated. The defendants are presumed innocent.

What the trial covers

Dutch intelligence has assessed that Iran was likely responsible for the attempted killing. Prosecutors say possible Iranian involvement falls outside the scope of this case, which examines the alleged roles of the people who carried out or directed the plot. The intelligence assessment remains separate from any finding the court may make about the defendants.

Prosecutors say the court is scheduled to deliver its judgment on December 21.
