Europol reports more than 9,000 extremist-content referrals linked to online gaming

Published November 3, 2026 · Official Europol announcement

What was announced

Europol says specialised units from 16 countries identified and referred more than 9,000 links to violent extremist and terrorist content across 47 social-media and gaming platforms. Its Internet Referral Unit coordinated the action with Spain.

The material promoted multiple forms of violent extremism, including jihadist, right-wing, left-wing and anarchist narratives.

Why it matters

The agency describes efforts to use online role-playing communities for propaganda and recruitment, including recruitment of young people. The action concerns exploitation of gaming environments, rather than evidence that ordinary gaming or role-playing itself constitutes extremism.

What the numbers establish

Referrals identify content for the hosting platforms’ attention. The announcement does not establish that all links were removed, that each link represents a separate person, or that 9,000 attacks were prevented. It provides no measured reduction in recruitment following the action.

Readers should distinguish the scale of content identified from evidence of the operation’s longer-term effectiveness.
