Serbia raises terrorism alert after attack on embassy guard

Published October 28, 2026 · Official Serbian government statement

What authorities announced

Serbia raised its terrorism threat level to red, its highest category, after an attack on a police officer guarding Israel’s embassy in Belgrade early on October 28. Interior Minister Ivica Dačić said the officer sustained minor injuries and killed the attacker in self-defence.

The minister described the incident as terrorism and announced increased police presence at locations of security significance.

What remains an assessment

Dačić said security services had monitored the attacker, whom he described as a minor and an Islamic State supporter. These statements are the authorities’ account; the release does not establish that Islamic State directed the attack.

Why it matters

The change concerns Serbia’s domestic security posture. It is not a change to the U.S. terrorism alert system or a finding that an attack elsewhere is imminent. Readers in Serbia should follow current local official instructions.
