The sentencing outcome

Mohamed Mohamoud, 22, received an extended sentence comprising 12 years in prison and four years on licence, according to an October 19 police announcement shared on behalf of Counter Terrorism Policing South East.

A jury convicted him on August 18 of preparation of acts of terrorism under section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006. Police say the case concerned travel to Somalia to join Daesh, also known as ISIS.

Read the sentence accurately

The 16-year extended sentence includes both custody and a subsequent licence period. It should not be described as 16 years in prison. This is a sentencing development after a conviction, rather than a new allegation awaiting trial.

Why it matters

The case concerns preparations to support a terrorist organisation overseas. Police describe digital evidence as part of their investigation; this briefing omits recruitment contacts, routes and other operational particulars.

The outcome concerns one defendant’s conduct. It provides no basis for generalising about Somali communities or Muslims.
